Humourous image

The Internets are often a bad waste of time without reward for me, but today I found an exception. Isn’t it sad?

I am sick with a cold. Woot. I hate it. I’m tired. I’m diffuse.

So where have I been?

August 18th, 2007 by bored

Working and living, thank you.

Work is going well. I don’t talk about work on my blog, otherwise.

Life is going well, with hiccups, as ever. I’m moving into a new place with my girlfriend in October. We kind of waffled on whether to move or keep my current place, and decided to go with a new place at the last minute, so I gave notice late and have to stay here an extra month after Kim has to be out of her current place. No new computer this fall. Maybe in Spring.

Summer has been the usual: hang out, watch movies, go shopping—well, that one’s not usual for me, but we have to make some concessions. Been to Ikea three times in the last six months. Sometimes I miss being poor. There were far fewer distractions, and learning is free.

Personally, I’d rather spend my personal time working: researching and programming. It’s what I like to do. I need to design and create. Currently, I’m in a technical cycle, as opposed to an artistic one, and I think I’ll be like this for another ten years at least. Not that drawing and writing don’t still occupy my mind. I can just accomplish much more and contribute much more as a programmer and software developer at the moment.

I’m pessimistic that words can do much to change the course of history right now. It is simply impossible to make a point without being drowned out by noise. People will believe only what they want to be true. An endless string of irrefutable facts coupled with an unassailable logical argument cannot move a stubborn irrational mind. The world is awash in nonsense, propaganda and outright lies, and the only thing that can cut through them are machines of truth. Good software can do more than a mountain of words. Words are dead to those with dead ears. But the truth will out, and the liars will hang by nooses they tied with their own hands.

So, I’m studying and writing software. And not useless garbage for amusement, either. Real software to do real things. Software that speaks the truth.

Update:

Speaking of software for fighting lies: Wikiscanner.

Kill spammers’ computers

What ever happened to the idea that if you abuse your privileges, you lose them?

The Internet is a privilege. You abuse it, you lose it. You don’t get to come to my house any more if you leave your crap lying around after you leave. Likewise, if you litter my network with junk, you’re off my network.

This is easy. The source of unwanted Internet traffic is easily discoverable. So take that computer off the network by refusing any traffic to of from its address. That has to be enforced by the service provider. If they won’t do it, you discard any traffic to or from their address range. If that isn’t enforced by their upstream provider, or, potentially, by the country in which they reside, then you take that provider or country and drop all their traffic. Finito.

While we’re at it, take people’s licenses away when they refuse to follow the traffic laws on the street. No more whining and patting people on the head. If you want to have a job, and make a living, and care for your family, you either follow the rules and stop being a danger to others, or you walk to work.

I’m sick of the shit. I’m sick of criminals and discourteous idiots getting to do whatever they want because no one has the stones to stick it to them. If anything demonstrates the spineless uselessness of the government, its the tolerance of the endless abuse of privileges under the bullshit excuse that they have rights that they in fact do not have. It has to stop.
